The canton of Bern is officially bilingual: most people speak German, while French is spoken in the Bernese Jura and alongside German in Biel/Bienne, the largest bilingual city in Switzerland. Besides the federal city of Bern, its main towns include Thun, Köniz, Burgdorf and Langenthal. Since 1 January 2026, Moutier has belonged to the canton of Jura. Customary termination dates are 30 April and 31 October in Bern and its surroundings, and vary elsewhere. In the Bernese Jura, household employers can turn to Chèque Emploi, run by Caritas Jura.
