Geneva at a glance
Geneva sits at the south-western tip of Lake Geneva, where the Rhône leaves the lake, in a canton almost entirely surrounded by France. It is Switzerland's second-largest city and French-speaking. With the European headquarters of the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross and many other international organisations, English is widely spoken too. Most people rent, often in older blocks of flats. The classic small jobs are a regular cleaner (femme de ménage), a babysitter after school, furniture assembly after a move and a thorough clean before the end-of-lease inspection (état des lieux). Geneva also has its own rules for household work: a cantonal minimum wage and its own standard contract for domestic staff, which replaces the federal one.
