Furniture assembly in Switzerland: IKEA, wardrobes and prices

Flat-pack furniture takes time: a PAX wardrobe, a MALM bed, a KALLAX shelf or a new desk. A helper with the right tools can assemble it for you and fix tall pieces safely to the wall. This guide gives indicative prices with their sources and tells you what to prepare and agree. On Workpop you post your assembly job for free.

What furniture assembly includes

The helper unpacks the parts, follows the instructions and puts the furniture together where you want it. Wardrobes, bookcases and other tall pieces should be fixed to the wall so they cannot tip over – most come with the fittings for this.

  • Flat-pack furniture from IKEA and other shops
  • Wardrobes such as PAX, beds, desks and shelves
  • Garden and balcony furniture
  • Taking furniture apart before a move and reassembling it
  • Fixing tall furniture to the wall

How much does furniture assembly cost?

The Swiss quote portal Ofri lists company prices of CHF 165–400 per assembly job, with an average of CHF 260, and CHF 160–310 as a flat rate for a wardrobe (January 2023). IKEA Switzerland charges from CHF 100 per item for its own assembly service, for example a sofa, a double bed or a PAX wardrobe. If you do not book it with delivery, a travel fee of CHF 99.95 is added (September 2026).

With a private helper you agree the price yourselves: a fixed price for the whole job, or an hourly rate, in line with minimum wages. A large wardrobe with sliding doors takes much longer than a simple shelf, so list every piece.

How to describe your assembly job

List each piece with its product name and the number of boxes, or add a link or a photo of the instructions. Say whether the furniture has already been delivered, which floor you live on and whether there is a lift.

Say if anything must be fixed to the wall, and what the wall is made of if you know. If you rent, check your lease before drilling.

You can write your job in English: other users can translate it into their language with one click. People nearby send you an offer with a price and a date.

What to agree before the helper comes

Before the helper comes, check the delivery: are all the boxes there and undamaged? Clear enough floor space to lay out the parts.

Agree a fixed price or an hourly rate, who brings the tools (drill, screwdriver, spirit level) and who takes away the cardboard and packaging. Collection rules for cardboard differ by municipality. Also agree what happens if a part is missing and a second visit is needed.

Posting on Workpop is free and there is no commission. When you agree, you both get a digital contract, and you pay the helper directly.

If you pay a private person for this work, you may count as their employer for AHV (Swiss old-age and survivors' insurance). Whether someone is self-employed or employed is decided by the compensation office case by case, based on the actual circumstances. Check with your cantonal AHV compensation office.

What to agree on first

  • List of items and number of boxes
  • Floor, lift and where to assemble
  • Fixing to the wall: yes or no
  • Who brings the tools
  • Fixed price or hourly rate
  • Who takes away the packaging
  • What happens if a part is missing

Time of year

Assembly jobs come up all year, most often around a move, when a new flat needs furnishing. Examples of busy dates: the end of March and September in the city of Zurich, or 1 April, 1 July and 1 October in Vaud.
