Zurich at a glance

Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and the capital of the canton of the same name. It lies at the northern end of Lake Zurich, where the Limmat leaves the lake, and is divided into 12 districts (Kreise) and 34 quarters. The official language is German – day to day you will hear Swiss German – and with a large international community, English is widely heard too. Most residents rent their home, so typical small jobs revolve around the flat: regular cleaning, end-of-tenancy cleaning, help on moving day, furniture assembly, dog walking or tutoring for the children. ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich also bring many students to the city. In the city, the customary dates for ending a tenancy are 31 March and 30 September, unless your lease says otherwise.
