What computer help can include

Computer help covers everything from a quick fix to patient lessons. Some people want the job done; others want to learn to do it themselves. Say which you prefer.

A good helper explains things slowly, in plain words, and writes down the steps so you can repeat them on your own.

  • Setting up a new computer, tablet or smartphone
  • Email, WhatsApp and video calls
  • Wi-Fi, printer and TV connection
  • Backing up photos and files
  • Updates and virus protection
  • Apps such as TWINT or SBB Mobile
  • PC and Mac repair, data recovery

How much does computer help cost?

Pro Senectute offers professional IT help for older people. In Aargau it costs CHF 139 per hour plus CHF 20 for travel, billed in 15-minute units, VAT included. Pro Senectute beider Basel charges CHF 120 per hour, or CHF 400 for 4 hours (September 2026).

A private helper sets their own price. Agree it per hour or for the whole job, in line with minimum wages.

Stay safe

Stay next to the helper while they work on your devices. Never give anyone your e-banking codes, card PINs or the passwords you use for payments – type them in yourself. Write down any new passwords and keep them somewhere safe.

Workpop does not check criminal records. Read the reviews, which are only possible after a completed contract, and do not let anyone install remote-access software that you do not understand.

Be careful with unexpected calls from people who say they work for Microsoft, your bank or your phone company and want to access your computer. Hang up, and call the company back on the number you know.

How to describe the job

Name the device and, if you know it, the model and operating system. Describe the problem or what you want to learn, and add a photo of any error message. Say whether the helper should come to your home. Have your login details for email and your Apple or Google account ready for the visit – but never write them in the job.

Posting on Workpop is free and there is no commission. You can write in English: other users can translate your job into their language with one click. When you agree, you both get a digital contract, and you pay the helper directly.

If you pay a private person for this work, you may count as their employer for AHV (Swiss old-age and survivors' insurance). Whether someone is self-employed or employed is decided by the compensation office case by case, based on the actual circumstances. Check with your cantonal AHV compensation office.

What to agree on first

  • Device, model and the problem
  • Fix it for you, or teach you
  • At home or elsewhere
  • Hourly rate or fixed price
  • Never share payment passwords or PINs
  • Who keeps new passwords safe

Time of year

Computer help is needed all year. After Christmas and birthdays, new phones and tablets often need setting up – post your job when the device arrives.
