Lucerne at a glance

Lucerne lies where the Reuss flows out of Lake Lucerne, with Mount Pilatus and the Rigi on the horizon, and is the capital of the canton of the same name. The city is German-speaking, and its Chapel Bridge and Old Town draw visitors all year round, so tourism is part of daily life. Since 2010 Littau has been part of the city, adding suburban quarters such as Reussbühl on the western side. Most residents rent, and typical small jobs include cleaning, help with moving and furniture assembly, dog walking, garden care and support for older people with shopping and errands. Unlike many cantons, Lucerne has no customary moving dates: when you can end a tenancy depends on your lease or, failing that, on the statutory rules.
