Neuchâtel lies on the northern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, the largest lake entirely within Switzerland, with the Jura rising behind it. It is the French-speaking capital of the canton of Neuchâtel, with a university and the CSEM microtechnology centre. Since 2021 the city has also included Peseux, Corcelles-Cormondrèche and Valangin. It now reaches from the lakeside quarters of Serrières and Monruz up to Chaumont, high above the lake on the first ridge of the Jura. Most homes are rented flats, many of them on sloping streets above the lake. Typical requests are cleaning, help with moving and furniture assembly, tutoring and garden care. The canton sets its own minimum wage, and the customary termination dates are 31 March, 30 June and 30 September.
