Lugano is the largest city in Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton south of the Alps, and lies on Lake Lugano between Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore. Successive mergers have added lakeside villages such as Gandria and hillside quarters such as Pregassona and Breganzona to the city. Italian is the language of daily life, although you will also hear German and English, especially from people who have moved here or keep a holiday home. Lugano is a banking and university city (USI), and many flats and villas are second homes. Besides regular cleaning and babysitting, people ask for garden care, someone to keep an eye on the house while they are away, and cleaning before and after a stay. Ticino has its own cantonal minimum wage.
