Chiasso at a glance
Chiasso is Switzerland's southernmost municipality, right on the border with Italy opposite Ponte Chiasso, a district of Como. The language is Italian. The town grew around its customs offices and its railway station, the southern end of the Gotthard line, and trade and logistics still matter here. Besides the centre and the Boffalora and Soldini quarters, it includes the hillside villages of Pedrinate and Seseglio, part of Chiasso since 1976. Most residents live in flats, and many people commute across the border in both directions. Common small jobs include cleaning, help with moving and clearing out, furniture assembly and errands for older residents. If you live in Italy and hold a Swiss cross-border permit, check the rules before taking on extra work.
