Mendrisio at a glance

Mendrisio is the main town of the Mendrisiotto, Ticino's southernmost region, between Lake Lugano and the Italian border. The language is Italian. Mergers between 2004 and 2013 brought in villages such as Capolago, Rancate, Ligornetto and Meride, where the fossil site of Monte San Giorgio is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is home to the Academy of Architecture of the Università della Svizzera italiana, a large outlet centre and vineyards known for Merlot, and many people cross the border every day to work here. Houses with gardens and vines are common in the villages, so garden work, hedge trimming and moving help are frequent requests, along with cleaning and tutoring. Ticino has its own cantonal minimum wage.
